I whacked a chunk of meat off my thumb the other day while carving more bears. The rough shapes are cut with a scroll saw and the finer features come about with a utility knife. Our local cable guy taught me the idea of duct taping one's fingertips as protection from doing things like stripping wire... and of course I cut myself on a day that I neglect to do so. Duct tape is also a great way to keep gauze and bandaids in place all day.
